The AFC Champion Chiefs and NFC Champion Eagles are traveling to New Orleans in a few days to continue their Super Bowl LIX preparation.
The Eagles are going for their second-ever Super Bowl title after upsetting the Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII to end the 2017 season. The Chiefs’ mission is a great deal more historic as Kansas City hopes to win an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl.
This encounter on February 9 is a rematch of the Super Bowl LVII game in Glendale (AZ) in February 2023 when the Chiefs outlasted the Eagles 38-35 in a thrilling matchup.
Both head coaches—Kanas City’s Andy Reid and Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni—continue to lead the clubs as they did two years ago.
The two coaching staffs include NFL alumni who now are assistant coaches in their post-playing days. The Chiefs have five former players on their staff and the Eagles include four alumni in their coaches’ room.
The five Chiefs assistant coaches who are former NFL players are:
- Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck (played with Seahawks, Bears, Redskins; 1989-2000)
- Defensive Backs Coach Dave Merritt (Dolphins, Cardinals; 1993-95)
- Running Backs Coach Todd Pinkston (Eagles; 2000-05)
- Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub (Eagles, Rams; 1985-86)
- Outside Linebackers Coach Rod Wilson (Bears, Buccaneers, Bears; 2005-10)
These same five assistant coaches also were on the Chief’s staff each of the last two Super Bowl winning seasons.
The four player-alumni who are now coaching for the Eagles are:
- Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay (Dolphins; 2013)
- Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore (Lions, Cowboys; 2012-17)
- Wide Receivers Coach Aaron Moorehead (Colts; 2003-07)
- Quarterbacks Coach Doug Nussmeier (Saints, Colts; 1994-98)
We at NFL Alumni are anxiously waiting to see if history will be made by the Chiefs winning their third straight Super Bowl or if Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni will win his second Super Bowl in just four seasons. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs and the Steeler’s Mike Tomlin have taken their respective teams to the Super Bowl twice in their first four seasons as head coaches.
The final game of the league’s 105th season cannot kick off soon enough!
