Raiders alum Matt McGloin was a walk-on at Penn State in 2009. He graduated five years later with a bachelor’s degree and a school-record 46 touchdown passes.
McGloin was not selected in the 2013 Draft but signed as a rookie free agent with the Raiders. He was talented enough to play four years in Oakland. The Pennsylvania native then decided to return to his home state to see what else life had in store.
The 33-year-old McGloin moved into a different arena earlier this month when he was sworn in as a newly-elected Lackawanna (PA) County Commissioner. The County includes Scranton where McGloin was born and later starred at quarterback for West Scranton High.
“My wife Bailey and I have spoken often to our neighbors over the years about the importance of serving and being active in the county,” says McGloin, a father of two young boys. “Those of us who have young families need to be active because this is about the future of our county and about the next generation. I truly believe our best days are ahead of us if we continue to be active.”
McGloin won the Lackawanna County Commissioner post last November in his first try at political office. His new responsibilities as Vice Chairman of the three-member Board include care for human services, economic development programming, and finances.
McGloin has been in involved in his home community since founding the eponymous “Matt McGloin Foundation” in 2016. The Foundation has focused on improving the health and well-being of the county’s children and young adults. The non-profit also has awarded annual scholarships to high school graduates, funded children’s health care needs and supported organizations assisting homeless youth.
We at NFL Alumni wish our brother Matt McGloin much success in his first year as County Commissioner. We appreciate the work he has performed for his Lackawanna neighbors through his Foundation and what he will do in his new government service role.
